Gateway Founder, Manu Bhojwani , is the proud scion of a pioneer trading family, which established the iconic Shankar’s Emporium on High Street (Singapore).

The Shankar’s story postulates a sterling example how the economic fortunes of Singapore developed from the post-war era to its current eminence as a global business epicenter. In the ensuing 64 years, Shankar’s has grown into a premier conglomerate with international trading operations.The group has also diversified into other lucrative opportunities including real estate investments and developments, coffee processing, and investments.

The Shankar’s Story

Emigrating from Sindh in 1933 (pre-partition India) Jamnadas Bhojwani, Manu’s father, later established Malaya Silk Store in Singapore (1946), as the island and most South East Asian countries aspired to recover from the ravages of World War II and Japanese occupation.

In those environs, Jamnadas believed Wholesale Trading offered the safer, accelerated route to better fortune. Acquiring full control of Malaya Silk in 1947, he invited younger brother Harkishindas to join his ambitious enterprise. In 1957, the brothers established Shankar’s Emporium, a wholesale and trading business on High Street. Simultaneously starting retail outlets and expanding their

  • Geographic operations/distribution to Eastern Europe, Middle East and North Africa (MENA), besides SE Asia and Indian Sub-Continent.
